1-Card Tarot Draw: The Fool

NtxlUMg.png

Fool! The card of unlimited potential. I read that as a prediction of earning lots of XPs in this scenario. The maximum number of XPs in At Death's Doorstep is 7 and is known for its association with luck. However, getting 7 XPs is dependent on Nether Mist. Should Joe linger in the manor waiting for it to appear? No. The Fool is all about spontaneity and living the present. Good things will happen to Joe over the course of this scenario if he embraces the spirit of adventure. But, an important question is left unanswered, should the detective support the Silver Twilight Lodge or oppose them? The Fool supports new approaches and innovative ideas, but both the Coven and the Lodge are well-established traditional organizations and in contrast to TFA and TDE there's no "all-by-yourself" option. Perhaps the read is long-term and refers to some significant changes in the Return to TCU?

True to Fool's prediction, the opening rounds were quite carefree. His tarot card was put on the table for free, the Unsolved Case was dealt with without losing clues and, as best as I can tell, Joe managed to hide his folding camera in plain sight. He took 3 damage, which I assume represent the spirits fooling around with the vials of strange solution Joe had in his pocket. It was easy to blame it on an unfortunate cigarette burn and the staff were on hand to quickly and discretely replace Joe's pants, which in turn gave him an excuse to go near the Master Bedroom.

No two ways about it, these encounter cards were trivial and so Joe is making good progress. He's at 6 Intellect, 5 Combat and 4 Willpower and already has the three clues needed to spawn Joseph on advance. At this point the best thing to do would be to enjoy the party while positioning himself to avoid the Watcher.

Yep. See the Keeper of Secrets? He did something to hasten the Watcher's arrival and now it is going to pursue him relentlessly. This allows our detective to bypass the Watcher on the way to balcony without evading or using ammo and supplies. As the fight with the Shadow Hound shows tests introduce an element of risks. In this particular case we'll say that Joe had his shot aligned perfectly, but Shadow Hound hadn't fully materialized and the bullet went right past it. It's down, but but we've been getting enemies from the encounter deck for the last three rounds and it remains to be seen whether there are more monsters running riot inside the mansion.

Why am I not surprised that Mr. Rook has been there chatting with Mr. Meiger? The two of them didn't look particularly agitated. I wonder if it because they simply consider Joe to be competent or are they holding back some other secrets from him. In any case, the anomaly seems to be receding and it's getting colder and colder. Joe's suit got rigid and snapped at the seams at worst moment. The thrown vial of liquid splattered harmlessly nowhere near the Watcher. Joe's eyes dart between the spectral shape, the doors to the office and the main exit. We'll have him check out the Office of course.

I'd say our detective is about an excellent impression. He detective emerges from the mansion with a wry smile and proceeds to shake hands with the Silver Twilight Lodge big-shots. Nothing can stop him, not even auto-fails tokens. In all honesty, this happened because the encounter deck was being lenient. See mythos phases #13 and #15? That's the encounter deck winking at us. In the end we didn't get Nether Mist, but aside from that we've scored full XPs and I'd say that fulfills the prediction from The Fool card. Onwards to the next scenario!
