Edit: Some corrections thanks to aeongate.

Jim's innate ability means he can more confidently test flat rolls without wasting resources to pump will. Scrying Mirror provides a buffer on important tests, meaning you never overcommit just to avoid failure penalties, and Dark Prophecy improves odds further.

Scrying Mirror additionally allows Prescientto hit with 100% accuracy. Prescient recurs Spectral Razor or Ward of Protection as necessary, or Azure Flame if it runs dry or gets discarded. Defiance zeroes out any especially risky failures, and after upgrading to Defiance also synergizes with Scrying Mirror for perfect accuracy.

Scroll of Secrets drawn early helps to dig for important cards like Azure Flame, and drawn late becomes a cheap source of secrets to feed the mirror.

Jim's ability also takes the edge off Azure Flame, letting you treat elder signs as skulls to avoid the backfire.

Eldritch Sophist combos with the Scrying Mirror and Decorated Skull. He comes preloaded with extra secrets to recharge the mirror, and lets you use charges generated by the Decorated Skull to recharge Azure Flame. If you're killing enemies in one cast, as you commonly will with the upgraded version, the combo becomes a more awkward, 0-level Twila Katherine Price. In a multiplayer game, the skull can generate charges from your allies' actions as well.

Jim runs Sixth Sense instead of Clairvoyanceto save more resources for Azure Flame, and because its triggered ability can help overcome high shroud that he would otherwise have difficulty with. That means upgrading to get the +2 will isn't an immediately priority.

Fine Clothes (for Carcosa) are to be upgraded to Dayana Esperence. Dayana can host Spectral Razor to become a murder machine, or Ward of Protection to smooth out treachery-focused adventures. After purchasing Charisma, the Sophist can be used to double her charges. She and the Sophist also provide a complementary set of damage/sanity soak, useful when Final Rhapsody inevitably comes up.

I like this decklist a lot, really taking advantage of Jim's cardpool with the interaction between Eldritch Sophist and Decorated Skull.

Worth noting that some of the card interactions you've mentioned in your write-up unfortunately do not work. Firstly, Dark Prophecy is not Spell-traited, and so cannot be recurred with Prescient nor attached to Dayana Esperence. Secondly, the level zero Defiance does not work when you use Scrying Mirror to reveal a chaos token early. This is because Defiance has to be already committed to the skill test prior to revealing a chaos token for the "Before revealing chaos tokens..." to take effect. Note that the level 2 Defiance lacks this text and therefore does work just fine with Scrying Mirror.

I am slightly concerned you might struggle to find your copies of Azure Flame in a timely manner, and aside from the Spectral Razors, you are pretty defenceless until you do find it. I would suggest Scroll of Secrets in place of Ritual Candles, as with the latest Taboo it is essentially a slightly slower Preposterous Sketches that can discard weaknesses, and the additional draw will help you find your assets. It is also another Sophist target while you don't yet have your mirror! I think Ritual Candles are less powerful when you already treat skulls as zeroes, but I suppose that if you are playing Carcosa then they are good for the "reveal another token" skulls on The Last King and The Unspeakable Oath. You could also consider Enchanted Blade in the hand slot to have a back-up weapon should Azure Flame be buried.

I do like that you can always tap Decorated Skull for an improved draw-resource action, and that should help a bit with the low draw power of the deck, but only if you are already set up to kill things. You definitely have enough important spells to consider Arcane Initiate as well, but I definitely wouldn't want her to get in the way of the Sophist.

As I said though, I am a very big fan of this deck's central concept of moving around secrets and charges. I'd love to hear about your experiences of playing this through Carcosa!

Thanks! Those are good points, I think I will swap candles out for the scroll. We have a Daisy running Old Book so that will (hopefully) help out with the draw, but I didn't consider that the scrolls also have late game utility as a secrets battery. I might pick up the upgraded enchanted blade after squeezing some XP out of Delve Too Deep.
