Gloria Goldberg and Norman Withers

dd

"Two starstruck lovers out to save the universe. But it was not in the stars they found their destiny - it was in each other."

Dynamic duo!

This deck is part of a dynamic duo series, and is meant to be played together with Dynamic Duo - Norman Withers.

It works just fine when paired with other investigators too, of course, but some cards might be less effective.

Premise

Gloria Goldberg and Norman Withers are both able to see into the future. Gloria's investigator ability enables you to really massage the encounter deck with Alyssa Graham, Scroll of Secrets and Foresight. Norman on his side will go the Mind's Eye route to handle those encounter cards Gloria can't (such as Grasping Hands), while trying to keep his own deck in optimal order. And somewhere on the middle they meet, with Foresight, Dr. William T. Maleson. Scroll of Secrets, Ward of Protection and Open Gate.

(I've also enjoyed putting Gloria and Norman together in one duo and pretending that they are lovers. Rawwwr! )

Weakness: Mobility isn’t really their thing. Any sort of physical activity isn’t their thing, really.

Synergy

Gloria will initially be the main fighter, but she'll fight on her terms when she wants to (unwanted non-elite enemies, please report to the discard pile). Those enemies that do pop up will be dealt with by combat spells or a quick sword cane. Norman will investigate as well as going the Mind's Eye route to try and pass strength and agility tests.

Upgrade path for Gloria

First, a little tip. We’re running two Arcane Research, and those give you a total 2 Xp per scenario to upgrade one spell. Upgrades, mind you, not buy new ones. I didn't include Down the Rabbit Hole because you need to add several new cards in the beginning of the campaign and that's a tempo hit I wanted to avoid.

Important upgrades, in my order of priority
  • Shrivelling. A Willpower of 5 is decent, but there’s plenty of enemies with Fight values of 3, 4 and even 5 (PS: I hate you, Deep One Bull).
  • Brand of Cthugha and Divination are fantastic. The price is right and the multitude of charges will let us have more fun with Sign Magick
  • Prophetic is both a spell test buff your as well as a great way to finance all those spell assets you need for Sign Magick.
  • Sign Magick. We want to be able to use the extra action as often as possible, with Sixth Sense and Divination as an enabler.
  • Charisma You depend on Alyssa Graham but you also need the card draw from Arcane Initiate. So charisma!
Other upgrades (in any order you’d like)

Tips and advice

  • Mulligan hard for Alyssa Graham. She is so good that she pretty much makes or break the deck. No other scrying effecsts even comes close; she's a a free 2 card search/discard each and every round with no negative effects. Oh, it's easy to forget that Alyssa has the ability to put on card on the bottom of the deck for one doom. Expensive but nice at times.
  • Put a mostly harmless treachery card under Gioria (with her investigator ability, as soon as you can). Then Liber Omnium Finium will have something to draw and you don't have to waste draws on a recurring Liber several times during the game.

New to Gloria and Mystics in general but this list looks super fun. Question, which cards generally speaking would you most likely take out of the deck as you get new spells?

Thanks for the kind words!

There's plenty of economy cards in the deck, so you can easily replace some of them. Uncage the Soul can be replaced with Prophetic, since they both finance your spell. When you have Prophetic, you might as well replace the cloak too, Spectral Razor can be upgraded to Brand. The Sword Cane can also be replaced by Sign MagickThere's sort of a limit break in the upgrade path - after you go for the Sign Magick you really need to make sure you have at least two different spells available with enough charges; such as Sixth Sense, Divination and Brand.

Hello - thanks for the write up. I'm a bit confused on the upgrade path, though :-(

You have Seeker cards in the 0XP deck, and so upgrading into Guardian cards isn't allowed according to her deckbuilding rules?

You're thinking of the dual Brand of Cthughas and Prohetics? They are multi-class cards, about which the rule states: "A multi-class card is a card which bears multiple class icons instead of one, and is a card of each of those classes. For example, a card with both a Rogue and a Guardian icon is both a Rogue card and a Guardian card for all purposes. Generally, a multi-class card can be included in an investigator’s deck if that investigator has access to either of that card’s classes."

So Gloria can include any multi-class card, as long as the card is Mystic + something else. Her special deck building rules only refers to cards that are only // (and only for skills and events, 0-1).
