Upgrade suggestions:

Disc of Itzamna will protect you from enemies. Considering you'll draw enemies, this seems critical. Alternatively (or additionally), Blinding Light gives you more ways to kill things that show up. Just make sure you have plenty of Guts. Encyclopedia is the best tome available to you. You should absolutely get that as soon as possible. Cryptic Research is great but you don't earn a ton of experience in the core set campaign so I'd hold off on it unless you're playing 3-4 players.
