This Rex Murphey deck is centered around Investigating...and Combat. The upgrade path includes identifying the solution to get to the "Strange Solution - Acidic Ichor" as soon as possible - turning him from a mild mannered Reporter into a dangerous and mad fighter.
Rex has many options to increase Investigation tests and several for Combat, including "I've got a Plan"/"Mind over Matter" and ".41 Derringer". He also has a little extra health from the "Leather Coat" and a "Rabbit's Foot" for card draw when he fails at tests. Last is the "Burglary" card to help him gain resources when needed - but this is honestly a relatively cheap deck cost-wise.
For your opening hand you want to find Dr. Milan Christopher and Magnifying Glass as soon as possible. Also getting Strange Solution into play faster so you can identify it early in the campaign is great.
Possible Upgrades:
Strange Solution: Acidic Ichor (4xp) - Base Combat of 6?! Attacking does +2 damage?! Yes!
Encyclopedia (2xp) - Giving +2 to any skill to any investigator at your location is good.
Upgraded Magnifying Glass (1xp) - Fast, free and returns to your hand when you don't need it so you can play other assets.
Pathfinder (1xp) - Free movement action. What more do I need to say?
Upgraded Deduction (2xp) - The better you succeed, the more clues you get.
