Finally found a Jim Culver build I like! And actually won with!

Note: I primarily play two handed on Standard difficult.

The Build

The build focuses on getting out Dark Horse to pump up Jim's stats. This alone makes him viable in almost any test. But like most Dark Horse decks you have to build around it.

Labranche is a good way to get a few extra resources when you need to play smaller assets. Then you save your Caches and Souls to pay for the larger ones. As well as a heavy lean on the neutral skills to keep your costs low.

I included 5 combat and 5 investigations cards since the key to Jim is to make him consistent. The one Drawn to the flame and Storm of Spirits are exchangeable for other combat or investigation cards.

No Stone Unturned is in to help you dig up Dark Horse if you don't initially draw it.

Ritual Candles are in since they pair so nicely with his ability.

I initially had Holary Rosary, but honestly, with Dark Horse, they just aren't that helpful for Jim. I've included Delve Too Deep, but don't sit on them too long since Jim doesn't like wasted space or time. Upgrade them out quickly. You could also swap them out for two more skills for some early speed.

Then there are some basic skills to help keep your costs low and the tempo high.

Upgrading

The first upgrades would be Shriveling(3) and Rite of Seeking(4). I know a lot of people go Grotesque Statue fast. But I think this is a mistake for Jim. His biggest weakness is that he doesn't get a ton of actions per turn. So these will help speed up your game.

Then dump some Delve Too Deeps for Grotesque Statue.

Song of the Dead is great for Jim, but only after you have a couple Statues. They are a late campaign power card.

Is Madame Labranche working in this build? There are not that many 1 cost cards, i think Lone Wolf might be better choice here as potentially you can start round with 2 resources to play Flashlight, No Stone Unturned and later Grotesque Statues in addition to 1 cost cards. Whereas with Madame Labranche you'd have to spend an action for that second resource.

Yes, she works great! So you can end up with two resources with Labranche if you plan ahead. Use LaBranche at the start of upkeep, then collect your normal resource and not opt out with Dark Horse. Plus she works as your typical Ally meat shield. Also the extra card draw does come in handy on occasion.

That being said, Lone Wolf is a good suggestions. It requires less planning and then you can opt into some Mystic allies. Maybe drop Delve Too Deep and add some Arcane Initiate to get some better spells faster? I think I would still prefer LaBranche for her versatility.

Oh i forgot she can be used in upkeep as well, that's nice. I'm going to try your build and i'll post how the testing went.

Given that you've got Madame Labranche to get you to 2 resources under Dark Horse, Holy Rosary is a better inclusion than Ritual Candles imo. Could you go into more detail as to how come Holy Rosary isn't worth it?

@ZuntirAwesome! Looking forward to your results.

@veneretioSo, with Dark Horse Jim operates at a 5+ Will which I found more than adequate from start to finish of the campaign.

A big part of this build is using Jim's ability on most of his stats and really optimizing that angle. Ritual Candles, while generally not as good of a card, does provide a passive boost to all stats.

Also, once you get Grotesques Statues into play it becomes even more helpful. Sometimes you'll draw a -4 and a BS token. That +1 can put you up to a success and help keep you moving forward. Which, to be fair, some of it is personal bias because I think the fun of Jim is skewing the odds.

I did find that dropping Holy Rosary was a big push for me to get a feel for Jim. When you focus exclusively on Will you can lose sight of what makes Jim good. Which is that his ability works for every stat. I know some people (@Zuntir) are trying some St. Hubert's Key builds for Jim, which I think is an interesting angle because now you get a boost to Will and Intellect and can do an interesting clue getter build.

@TheDukeOfSpades Excellent point that Jim's value is that he has overall decent stats(apart from agility).

Other mystics right now(Agnes, Akachi, haven't played Marie yet) are very draw dependent, that's less of a case with Jim. His 5 OoF slots can be used to pack non spell cards that enhance either combat or investigating.
