Jim 'Skullseeker' Culver

"I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness." - H.P. Lovecraft - From Beyond, 1934

When I saw the new Dark Prophecy card I immediately thought of it as a strong card for Jim Culver to have him draw even more skull chaos tokens while testing. That's where I started building on this deck, so here it goes!

Assets

  • As a lot of Mystics do, I want Jim to also rely on his willpower stat as much as possible instead of trying to boost everything. That's where Sixth Sense comes in for investigating and Shrivelling for combat (more about that soon). Since this takes up both arcane slots, I have Sword Cane in there for evading or also fighting if Shrivellingisn't out yet.

  • Arcane Initiate helps us find these Spells as soon as possible in case you have a bad mulligan and it also takes some horror for you. Just have her take the damage and horror when you used her ability to find the necessary spells.

  • Expensive cards those are huh? That's why I decided to slot in Lone Wolf to double up on resources each turn as soon as possible (mulligan hard for this one!).

  • Holy Rosary and Ritual Candles boost all other cards because of their extra willpower. They will be slotted out soon in the campaign, so don't worry too much about the Ritual Candles skill being redundant while playing Jim.

  • I don't like Jim's Trumpet so use it for a commit whenever you need it. You could still play it for some healing if you are really running low, but other card effects and your high Willpower should keep you running for some time.

"Daddy used to say, "Jazz is a lot like liquor, it makes everything go down a little smoother." Daddy used to say a lot of stupid things." - Jim's Trumpet, 2016

Events

  • Dark Prophecy is what started it all for me, because it can be used so versatile. Need to really nail that Shrivelling on that one critical enemy? DP is there for you. Need that one final clue for a sure case scenario conclusion? DP is there for you. Use it whenever you need it most, going by what state the game is in.

  • Ward of Protection needs no further explanation, it just helps us get out of risky situations, especially in early game when you're not completely set up just yet.

  • Emergency Cache is here for your resource troubles. Who doesn't know this one?

  • There are a lot of commitment cards in here to boost willpower (Fearless, Jim's Trumpet, Guts, Unexpected Courage), but then we also have Lucky! for when we still manage to fail a test we really needed to pass.

  • Finally I added Preposterous Sketches for the card draw, because we want to see every single card in this deck to be a real powerhouse!

Skills

  • Defiance is like another side to the coin of Jim's ability. We want to be searching for skulls, but Defiance lets you ignore another one you really don't want to see.

  • Fearless is a nice way to heal off some of that Shrivelling kickback and other scenario stuff that hurts our mental health bar. Also, this deck is focused on Willpower dependency and Fearless boosts Willpower, so 1 plus 1 equals 2 right?

  • Guts is there for both the Willpower dependency and the extra card draw.

  • Unexpected Courage for when you need it in any other kind of skill test you really want or need to pass.
