Read the signs and Spectral Razor should be used when you need the guaranteed amount of clues or damage or a bonus to the check; will be more reliable after upgrade.
after the first 19 xps to upgrade Olive McBride, Guts, Read the Signs, Spectral Razor, and Storm of Spirits, there shouldn't be much need left for XP spends. after 19xp, I would recommend Versatile + Four of Cups(x2), Ward of Protection(x2) and Granny Orne(add in Charisma).
Robes of endless night upgrade should not be needed, but could be fun if there is nothing else to do.
If you want upgrades faster Down the Rabbit Hole and Arcane Studies can be used without much worry.
