Carolyn Fern is clearly designed to be a support character. But can she function solo? Let's give it a try!
Investigating: Investigating comes naturally to Carolyn so let's limit how many cards we devote to intellect to leave room for improving her combat. This means choosing passive boost cards so that they can be used repeatedly. Magnifying Glass and St. Hubert's Key fit the bill nicely. Dr. Milan Christopher is also nice but competes with Carolyn's boyfriend (see below).
Combat: Carolyn needs lots of help here, but thankfully she has a great pool of level 0 cards to draw from. We'll include 2 copies of No Stone Unturned to help her get whatever she is missing. Then let's start with the card that uses her intellect to fight, "I've got a plan!". Next comes cards that take advantage of her slightly worse willpower: Shrivelling, Mists of R'lyeh and Storm of Spirits. Then we'll add the best level 0 weapon (Machete). All of these cards need support, which can be found with Physical Training, Anatomical Diagrams and skills with 3 icons (Steadfast and Take the Initiative). We'll use the best healing card in the game, Peter Sylvestre. In fact, Carolyn feels that Peter can be Trusted to handle most of her horror, and she always feels more resourceful when he does, so we'll add in some of our own horror with Painkillers, Forbidden Knowledge and Ward of Protection. We wouldn't want Peter to sit around with nothing to do, after all. First Aid and Hypnotic Therapy will round out the deck.
Please let me know what you think!
Carolyn isn't allowed to have Weapon cards. You'd have to do this without Machete.
