So I've played the main campaign through a fair few times with Agnes, and feel I'm approaching my final build for her out of the Core Set.

While the deck is focussed on being a spell-based damage dealer, this is a pretty flexible deck. Agnes can offer some support and encounter management with Scrying and Ward of Protection, and she is also able to dig out clues (useful in Solo!) using both "Look what I found!" and Drawn to the Flame. The latter is especially good in combination with Scrying, but also great to use on any location that has either attracted some Obscuring Fog or a Locked Door. It's often worth saving this for when clues are needed fast; the climax of Scenario 3 is a perfect example!

Agnes can easily manage small enemies or deal the finishing blow on larger enemies using Forbidden Knowledge (while gaining Resources at the same time). She can even suck up the odd attack from an enemy during her turn by triggering an AoO, dealing a damage, then fire the Forbidden Knowledge to deal another damage during the Enemy phase before she's attacked. For this reason, I can see maybe dropping a Flashlight or something for a second Leather Coat to give her a little more health.

For skills, I've gone with Agnes' two weaker areas, which is better suited for games with 1 or 2 'gators. In a larger game I'd be more tempted to reinforce her strong area with Guts. This is the same logic I only went for a single Flashlight; I prefer to leave clue gathering to Roland and Daisy, but I can contribute with Agnes here by using her events in a pinch!

Finally, I was initially concerned about Arcane Initiate, with it adding Doom. Some practice with her has shown you can usually work around the drawback, and being able to dig out more spells is ALWAYS good... unless, of course, she brings up Dark Memory! Additional copies of Scrying or Shrivelling can often help you through a difficult end game if a big monster shows up.

When I upgrade, I would normally go:

  • 2 x lvl 2 Lucky!: more cards is always good!
  • 2 x lvl 2 Blinding Light: no brainer, cheaper than lvl 0 AND more damage
  • 1+ lvl 4 Grotesque Statue: Great for the finale when you just need to lay down some definite hits. I would suggest Flashlight can probably come out, though Agnes doesn't have much issue with Hand slots

Hey unitled - I'm running a very similar Agnes build, just with 2 x Flashlight and 2 x Unexpected Courage for the Leather Coat & Perceptions. I find solo it works fine - those clue-gathering events do the hard work for you - and with anyone else supporting/taking over a role, she becomes very flexible and dangerous. I completely agree (and rate) Arcane Initiate - I think that's a wonder card early or at suitable doom-related times.

Thanks @zozo, I'm definitely finding this a flexible and powerful build. Both Flashlight and Unexpected Courage do a lot of work in solo, I'd go that way if I was doing that.

Who do you think she makes a good team with? She's not necessarily combat heavy enough to be the prime hitter, and not able to gather enough clues to be prime 'gator. Maybe she works well with a Roland?

All I have to do now is persuade my team mates to let me take Delve Too Deep...

You're welcome, @unitled. Perhaps with Rite of Seeking, once it's out, she'll round out better as a superstar, but yes, she can't quite fill any role perfectly. I'd agree with Roland as a good sidekick.

As for DTD... that's gonna be a card that divides play groups, isn't it? Agnes with a bit of scrying and cancellation is best prepared to play it, though!

So elvortel played this type of deck in a beginner scenario that she organised for me. I was skids and we had the librarian too. Pretty solid trio it seemed though we were firefighting damage towards the end of the scenario. The damage an opponent when taking a horror is really powerful. Would like to see some of the higher level cards next time.

How do you handle her weakness card Dark Memory? I assume best time to play it is in late game, as earlier it eats lots of actions that would be needed to setup assets and gather ressources.
