"Wiping a bead of sweat from her face, she pulled the bow-string tense to her cheek. A drip of blood ran down her cheek and onto the string..
'This one's for Peter', she whispered under her breath as the arrow let fly."

A combat focused Rita deck, built around the Ornate Bow.

Ornate Bow is an excellent weapon for Rita. Her natural ability can deal with 1-health enemies. Cheap Shot and Stunning Blow can deal with weak 2-health enemies if you are compressed for actions. The bow can take care of the rest. With the bow, Peter Sylvestre and Track Shoes, she is 9 Agility in combat, which can take care of almost anything. The bow's natural weakness to reloading is assisted by Lucky! and Live and Learn, both of which avoid a reload.

Outside of combat, the cantrips (Guts, Manual Dexterity, Overpower) provide protection against treacheries, as well as help drawing into your bow quickly. Baseball Bat is a backup until you draw the bow. Take Heart is a must for economy.

One of Rita's main weaknesses is her low Sanity. Her willpower and Peter Sylvestre mitigate this somewhat, but Cherished Keepsake provides a backup in case you don't draw Peter. Less cautious players could leave her teddy-bear at home, but it brings comfort to Rita in unusual times.

You aren't going to be doing much investigating with this deck, though "Look what I found!" is too good to pass up. Combined with the flexible Resourceful, you can grab quite a few clues if needed.

Obviously you don't start with 6 XP, so you'll need to run something else until you save up for the bow. Gravedigger's Shovel and Fire Axe both work, but Waylay works too as you still have your Baseball Bat.

Upgrades:

  • Will to Survive - one of the best cards in the game, and combined with Resourceful will open up a huge number of options.
  • Cornered - puts a lot of pressure on your draw, but is a hugely flexible and powerful card.
  • Peter Sylvestre - additional Will for treachery defence.
  • Oops! - works extremely well with the Ornate Bow, as again it saves you a reload.

I am not sure that Oops! will really help you in the miss situations. With the +2 to dexterity you start at a 7 with the bow but are likely an 8 most of the time. If you are fighting a 3 fight enemy, sure the auto-fail will get you a landed bow shot. But the auto-fail is the only thing that could come where it is needed. If you are fighting a 4 health enemy or higher, a single card thrown into the shot guarantees the hit except on the auto-fail. Except this time, Oops! won't save you because it will have failed by 4.

I like the deck design here.

That's a good point. Oops (2) becomes better on Hard/Expert, where modifiers like -5, -6, etc are more likely. On Standard, I'd prefer Cornered, which gives Rita more of a chance of getting Investigation and Will into play, if needed.

Well rounded deck! Good job!

Great deck! I used it as a base for the one I'm running right now, with some slight changes. Belly of the Beast seems perfect for Rita, and I found resources to sometimes be an issue so I took Caches. The draw of the cantrips is handy but I traded them all for UC, Cache and Belly. So far so good!

I have played a variation of this through Return to Path to Carcosa with success. What are your thoughts on perhaps using Sleight of Hand with Ornate Bow?

If you aren't playing the taboo rules I can see how Sleight of Hand could be useful
