Before the Black Throne

We’re in the realms beyond our limited material reality. We’re before the Black Throne! Final scenarios tend to be long so with no further delay…

Jenny starts the scenario with 2 scenario resources and 1 Mental Trauma.

Pre-Mulligan Hand: Physical Training, "Watch this!", "I'm outta here!", Overpower, Switchblade

Opening Hand: Physical Training, Switchblade, Take the Initiative, Lockpicks, Enchanted Blade

#1

  • PLAY Physical Training
  • PLAY Lockpicks
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 2 supplies left, 1 clue from Cosmic Ingress)
    • Those bad-stuff token effects are brutal. Not to mention there’s an extra -4 in the chaos bag. In theory testing at plus 3 should be alright, but I’m uneasy.
  • Upkeep: draw Hot Streak, 2 resources total.

#2

  • Mythos: 1/4 doom, Ancient Evils
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 1 supply left)
    • Bah! Jenny usually doesn’t run out of Lockpicks so fast.
  • The Cosmos Beckons (spend 1 clue, Infinity of Darkness, 2 damage, connect right)
    • This scenario is going to be hard to follow with just text logs. It’s only the second round, so the decision to take 2 damage in exchange for an advantageous location placement should be clear, but I’ve got no idea how to present that information later.
  • MOVE right to Infinity of Darkness
  • Upkeep: draw Cat Burglar, 4 resources total.

#3

  • Mythos: 3/4 doom, Acolyte (at Cosmos)
  • Infinity of Darkness (1 scenario resource left)
  • MOVE to Cosmos (Cosmic Gate, 1 horror)
    • It’s not the Hideous Palace! Note that to Jenny needs to get one or more clues then spend an action to use ability on the Act and only then she can actually move. Compared to that spending scenario resources to move the entire location is so convenient. Jenny must regret giving up her mementos to the Lodge.
  • PLAY Switchblade
  • FIGHT with Switchblade (, 0, defeat Acolyte)
  • Upkeep: draw High Roller, 5 resources total.

It's LiTaS but better! With various real-life distractions it took me two days to finish the scenario. I could only imagine myself sweating at the end if I didn't have that break in the middle. It's long and intense. It's similar to other scenarios in Circle Undone in that it's disproportionately harder for solo investigators. I've lost and in some part it was due to the random 'Our Princess is in Another Castle,' but in the end the loss felt deserved. I had my best shot at winning back in Union and Disillusion, but blew it. Overall, I would rank The Circle Undone on par with The Forgotten Age and higher than previous campaigns. The story threads were neatly tied up and looking back it seems our choices were meaningful. In other words, plotting an optimal route is not going to be easy.

Thanks for reading and see you in The Dream-Eaters! To tell you the truth I'm not especially keen on the Dreamlands, but I hope I'm going to be pleasantly surprised.

Alas, there's a glaring error in this run. You're supposed to move to the location that has been Cosmos-ed in. I've only noticed it after 2 months. Much too late to do anything about it.
