NOTE: Contains full spoilers for The Dunwich Legacy
Introduction
This deck was designed to complement a Jenny deck that is balanced between clues and fighting, so this deck is also somewhat balanced. This deck and the guide is inspired by Jenny Barnes - Don't test me (Dunwich Legacy on Expert) by Croaker13, along with ideas presented on reddit.
This is the deck I ran through The Dunwich Legacy verbatim, on Standard chaos bag with Hard/Expert token legend. See Lessons learned for how I'd play it different.
Restrictions
I have everything up to City of Archives not including Novellas.
My self imposed banned list I use for a campaign I'm familiar with:
Dr. Milan Christopher, Higher Education, Machete, Strange Solution: Acidic Ichor, Peter Sylvestre (2), Key of Ys, Leo De Luca, and Delve Too Deep is restricted to classes that can take it without limiting their card pool.
Though this banned list has only very minor effect on my card choices, most notably is Machete, if I took it, I would get -1 Knife and -1 Survival Knife. I would not run Dr. Milan Christopher in this list, as I prefer to have recyclable allies. With Dr. Milan Christopher this deck would look really different.
1. Card choices
-
Damage
With a of 4, we still need a +1 to reliably hit stuff, so I decided not to run .32 Colt. There aren't many other options available. In hindsight, I'd probably skip the Knife as it was never used, and run another Prepared for the Worst or Say Your Prayers. Also, of course Vicious Blow. -
Clues
I'm running the recycle Art Student and Calling in Favors part of "The Dunwich Breaker suite" explained in the Jenny deck along with Working a Hunch , Flashlight and Deduction. I'm not using Magnifying Glass because without Dr. Milan Christopher you can't really crank your high enough to reliably investigate. I'm also running a single Scene of the Crime which came in handy a few times. - Tech
2x On the Hunt is pretty sweet for dealing with cultists, and helps us activate our reaction ability to get a clue. Logical Reasoning is a must as our sanity is low and our low will makes it hard to get rid of Frozen in Fear. I also have 1 Say Your Prayers and I kind of wish I put in two. Shortcut is just really good, especially in helping movement in Essex County Express.
2. Scenario Rundown
This deck doesn't have access to Adaptable so it is harder to prepare for specific scenarios. Still, you should read aforementioned inspiration for this deck, as they give a real good rundown of the scenarios.
I will give a rundown of which upgrades I picked based on the XP I had, naturally you may have more or less. Adjust accordingly.
-
The House Always Wins
Start here. Jenny doesn't have any allies so you want to mulligan had for one to chuck in the Clover Club Lounge. Other than that, you and Jenny can do pretty much the same things. Try and have Jenny be left with two clues after clearing the back rooms, because only she can enable getting the last victory point using "I'm outta here!" unless you suicide, which is not advisable. -
Extracurricular Activity
Upgrades: Pick up some firepower, I chose 2x .45 Automatic. This deck was not designed for the two handed guardian weapons, as you very much need to be able to play Flashlight. Maybe with Bandolier, but I was never able to reliably get it when I needed it.
I left Dr. Francis Morgan for Jenny, and took him after I got Charisma.
It should be possible to kill The Experiment but it is much easier to get all the clues and warn the students. Clear Science Building and Student Union with flashlights, clear the Orne Library withArt Student and Working a Hunchor let Jenny Barnes do it with Drawn to the Flame . Try to get to Humanities Building before you have horror on you, and avoid going to Administration Building unless you have to. If Orne Library is already cleared and you have Art Student and [Working a Hunch] you can move into Administration Building and out the same turn. -
The Miskatonic Museum
Upgrades: Charisma time. Allows us more flexibility with our allies and run all the nice Story allies like Dr. Francis Morgan and Dr. Henry Armitage. Let Jenny evade the Hunting Horror as much as possible and only kill it if it builds up Doom.
Remember that the Hunting Horror spawns when you enter the Restricted Hall, so it's best to let Jenny in first, unless she us unprepared to handle it, then make sure you go in and kill it.
Lots of potential for Victory points here, take as much as you can without risking mental trauma. Really, play it safe. -
Essex County Express
Upgrades: I chose Beat Cop to help hit stuff and have automatic damage and a bit more sanity soak than Guard Dog. I also replaced Shortcut with Pathfinder which was definitely a mistake. Pathfinder is undoubtedly good, but we're a bit strapped for cash. Also, Shortcut is very useful for pushing Jenny into the next car.
This is do or die for Jenny, so it's your job to make sure she gets out the other side alive, yes, even if it means sacrificing yourself.
This is the scenario where I really wished I had Unexpected Courage and a second Say Your Prayers to help mitigate sanity from entering cars and other bad stuff. Hang back as far as is safe to be able to pick up Helpless Passenger while Jenny heads forward. -
Blood on the Altar
Upgrades: I went ahead and got another Beat Cop and Pathfinder, as I said, I'm not too keen on the Pathfinder and would rather start saving up for Stick to the Plan and Elder Sign Amulet.
On the Hunt is no longer very useful from here on out, as the enemies you're getting are harsh, and many of them would spawn away from you and are safer that way, so swap it out.
Unhallowed Country is a pain in the ass, as it makes your Art Student a dead card and is really hard to get rid of. That, and Kidnapped! is fairly unavoidable for you too. Play your Art Student early, and use them to soak of sanity at the earliest opportunity.
Don't play story allies unless you must, so they won't get Kidnapped!.
The Croaker13 has some nice tips about this scenario and Burned Ruins, go read it. -
Undimensioned and Unseen
Upgrades: We finished the scenario with mental trauma due to unresolved Cover Up, which meant there was only one real choice in Elder Sign Amulet. I also got lucky and had access to Zebulon Whateley, which is basically a free Elder Sign Amulet with some added bonuses.
Your job is to get the clues and keep the non-brood enemies off Jenny Barnes. If you kept your Shortcuts, you can use them to freely move out of a location with Brood of Yog-Sothoth. You can't really help with Esoteric Formula unless the Brood of Yog-Sothoth has 3-4 clues on it, but sometimes that might work. -
Where Doom Awaits
Upgrades: We got a really good result in Undimensioned and Unseen, which allowed me to straight up take Stick to the Plan, which will greatly help with the consistency of the deck. You'll want to also get Extra Ammunition when you can, and put on along with Emergency Cache and Prepared for the Worst. - Lost in Time and Space
The end is coming, and by this point you really want to have 2 Elder Sign Amulet.
This scenario is rough, and you're going to take horror, lots of it. Make sure you have sanity soak.
