Changelog:

Edit 22/12/21: I added some other Deck possibilities such as using the Dragon Pole during a whole campaign or choosing the Butterfly Swords in Make your own Deck!

Edit 11/02/22: Added the Synergy with Ace of Rods and clarified the flipping back to the unbroken side of the Discipline.

Intro:

The first run-through of the Edge of the Earth campaign gave us 2 insights: there is a lot of XP, and moving is heavily needed. On the other hand, healing Partners is not as necessary as initially thought.

This Deck is built for a 2-investigators run of the Edge of the Earth with Monterey Jack. To see the Build for Jack, click here.

Survivability: ★★★★☆

Economy: ★★★☆☆

Card Drawing: ★★★☆☆

Main Strategy:

• Spam your Dragon Pole or your Cyclopean Hammer with your ridiculously high to clean the board for your teammates.

• Use your Discipline to stay alive.

• Fill up your empty hand with the Discipline.

• Maintain the Story Partners alive with Ward of Protection.

• Use your Sixth Sense to speed up the game by discovering clues when there is no enemy.

Playing the early game with the Dragon Pole:

• Lily Chen was revealed with her intended weapon: the very thematic Dragon Pole.

• Thinking of having 5 Arcane Slots with Familiar Spirit, Bandolier+Sign Magick is unnecessary on the first scenarios when attacking with 6 is often more than enough (especially with no Ammo involved). So let's focus on filling up 3 Arcane Slots as easily as possible to have 7 to be able to skip the Discipline.

Filling your Arcane Slots:

• Scrying is cheap and quite useful (compared to Alchemical Transmutation). You will use it on a "lost" action when waiting for an enemy to be drawn. The best way to use it is on the Encounter Deck as it gives you a chance to tutor an enemy or at least direct some treacheries to you rather than on Jack/Bob and their low .

• Sixth Sense or Clairvoyance to support your cluever. Sixth Sense is more reliable as it doesn't risk hurting you, is cheaper and doesn't have charges. Clairvoyance, on the other hand, is interesting as you have only 2 Guts, so if you commit it, you want the best return on investment. You will also be able to use your Discipline's built-in ability on an investigation to get a maximum benefit.

To learn more about the different Paths for Lily, please read the review on her dedicated Card Page

• Finally, the newly released Talisman of Protection because it is Fast. It is also a good way to balance the risk of In the Thick of It.

• The Arcane Initiate is here to help you find your Arcane Slot Fillers as fast as possible. It also helps after the first scenario to find your Enchant Weapon!!

Boost your stats:

• To have a better success rate for your skill test, you need to improve your stats, which you can do in 2 ways: your Disciplines and your card pool. We will review your card pool here and discuss the Discipline in the next section.

• As we're planning on flexing, we want to improve our that is used for both Attacks and Clue getting while keeping a decent for when you only have your Enchanted Blade.

• Early campaign, Holy Rosary will be a good boost alongside your Discipline.

• Unfortunately there is no static boost in the card pool and Beat Cop / Grete Wagner are simply too expensive and the slots are limited. Better wait to get Beat Cop (2) that you can heal with Hallowed Mirror for more uses.

Reliable, that you can attach twice to the same Asset gives you +2, and up to +4 when you attach both to your Cyclopean Hammer attacks. This should be enough to reach the bonus even on harder difficulties.

A fully set up Lily will use her Hammer with no less than 14 on each attack. Even the -8 won't bother you anymore.

Disciplines:

When looking at Disciplines, there are 3 things to consider:

• The Static Boost: Running around with your Cyclopean Hammer you are interested in and . The is good for Encounter Protection occasionally.

• The one-off ability of the Discipline:

•• The most interesting is the Discipline that allows you draw cards when your hand is low. The more you need it, the more it gives. It is especially interesting as drawing cards is the biggest weakness of most .

•• The Discipline gives you more Attacks though the word "different" prevents you from using your Cyclopean Hammer 3 times. You can use it once, and then complete the 2 other attacks with Spectral Razor, Sweeping Kick, Fang of Tyr'thrha and so on, allowing you to clean the board before you even start using your 3 basic actions.

•• The Discipline gives you a great survivability but it unfortunately only works for yourself, not on Allies or other Investigators at your location. See it as a free, permanent Painkillers + Smoking Pipe on steroids.

** Finally the Discipline is rather useless. It takes one action to boost one test and depletes you from a highly appreciated boost to do so. The fact that you need to do it in advance prevents you from using it against the Encounter Deck. It is very likely that you will never use it, or only for like the last chance of winning the scenario on a certain test or something.

• Flipping it back to its Unbroken side after use:

•• The Discipline will be hard to flip back over as you need to never have more than 2 cards in your hand. As you draw one during the upkeep phase, it means that you need to finish the previous round with no card and use the card that you had in the previous Upkeep Phase during your turn so that when you draw one at the end of your turn, you do not overshoot the limit. The is thankfully the static boost that matters the least and this discipline will be your main target for the .

•• The should also be fine as you will probably not have enemies anymore after you just made 4-5 attacks unless you draw one enemy during the Mythos Phase immediately after using it. This build doesn't need for anything else than Encounter Prot though, so it's no big deal.

•• The Discipline should be quite easy to switch back as you overall have a good encounter prot.

•• Finally, the is a big handicap as it forces you not to have a single skill test to find it back. You can assume that you will never use it especially looking at how important its static boost is.

• Conclusion on the Disciplines:

• For a Cyclopean Hammer build, Lily will potentially take the Disciplines as follows:

•• 1st the for its Static boost that you use for Fighting, getting clues (and therefore win the game) while also offering a good survivability.

•• 2nd: The is likely to be your second Discipline for the Draw-Engine that it brings.

•• 3rd: the will be your 3rd Discipline because you do not need the Static boost at this point as you're already hitting harder than you'll ever need, so you can use its built-in capacity especially if you need to compensate the or some Move actions before fighting.

Increasing your movement:

The maps of this campaign are notoriously huge. Moving around the map will make the difference between success and failure.

• Safeguard (2) is the most action saving one, protect your and save tons of actions.

• Fang of Tyr'thrha is your friend to clean the map. It is expensive but does a great job against Spawn at enemies.

• On the Trail (1) is a good help to get faster to your target. You can play it first turn for example, collect 1 enemy on the way, then use your Discipline to kill them both.

Ethereal Slip is a good option but not so cheap and hard to fit in the Deck... A really satisfying combo is to kick an enemy 2 locations away with your Cyclopean Hammer and switch location with it after.

Clue Support:

Why having Sixth Sense and not Shrivelling or Azure Flame as a main fighter?

Your goal here is not to be a proper clue-getter but more to accelerate the game when there is no enemy on the board. We've all had that situation when you're fully prepared, but there are just 2-3 mythos phases without a single enemy.

The game is about a race against the Mythos, and defeating enemies helps you not be blocked in your quest but does not move the story forward (besides exceptions). Getting clues is really what brings victory, and by adding one spell to get clues, with an equivalent of 4 (up to 5), you improve your chances of success greatly.

Mulligan:

During the early campaign, your priorities for Mulligan will be anything that includes: Dragon Pole and tutoring: Arcane Initiate/Prepared for the Worst.

Later in the campaign, your one and only target is The Cyclopean Hammer. Keep anything that looks like The Mjölnir, a Backpack (2) or Prepared for the Worst.

Upgrade Path:

0xp - Discipline

• In the Thick of It Ever Vigilant x1 + Safeguard (2) x1 - 3xp - Total 3xp

•• In the Thick of It It is especially good in Lily Chen as it gives her access to her other Disciplines earlier in the campaign. Use it here to set up your Asset heavy deck faster and save actions moving.

• Scrying Enchant Weapon x2 - 6xp - Total 9xp

•• Enchant Weapon will be a new Arcane Slot filler and therefore can replace one of them. Scrying is good for tutoring but really action intensive, so it is the first one to be replaced.

15xp - Discipline

• Stick to the Plan x1 - 6xp - Total 15p

•• Attach Prepared for the Worst, Emergency Cache and Ever Vigilant.

• Arcane Initiate x2 Grete Wagner x2 - 6 xp - Total 21xp

•• Now that you have the Discipline, your draw is good enough to live without your Arcane Initiate. You can use the Beat Cop (2) if you do not own the Nathaniel Cho box.

30xp - Discipline

• Dragon Pole x2 Cyclopean Hammer x2 - 10xp - Total 31xp

•• Your main weapon until the end of the campaign. From there, nothing can stop you.

• Overpower x2 Reliable x2 - 2xp - Total 33xp

•• Reliable attached to your Cyclopean Hammer gives you Overpower for each attack and is Fast.

• Talisman of Protection x2 On the Hunt x1 + Fang of Tyr'thrha x1 - 7xp - Total 40xp

•• Look into the Encounter Deck, find an annoying Spawn requirement, take it, go there, kill it and get your money back. Neat.

• Glory x1 Empty Vessel x1 + Relic Hunter - 7xp - Total 47xp

•• Now we can go for luxury upgrades. This one is especially powerful as you play in Hard/Expert when tokens with symbols can make a huge difference.

Emergency Cache x1 On the Hunt x1 - 3xp - Total 50xp

•• You get the same amount of money, avoid a treachery card that may hurt your Partners and get to have fun.

The completely upgraded Lily Deck could end up somewhere along these lines

Make your own Deck!

• If you have a limited library of cards, you can go for:

•• Vicious Blow instead of Glory

•• Unexpected Courage instead of "Let me handle this!"

•• Rite of Seeking instead of Sixth Sense

•• Toe to Toe upgraded to Sweeping Kick to replace Spectral Razor

•• Beat Cop (2) instead of Grete Wagner (3)

•• Instead of Reliable that boosts your Cyclopean Hammer, you can opt for Charisma to have 2 Beat Cops (2) and Relic Hunter + Police Badge to improve your static boost.

•• Machete can replace Enchanted Blade as you may not play with taboo if you have a very limited collection.

•• Vicious Blow (2) instead of Enchant Weapon, sad, but you don't have the choice.

Enchanted Armor if you get a lot of trauma as one of the best soaks for you.

• The combo Holy Rosary and Nephthys (instead of or in addition to Beat Cop(2)) is incredible: generate tokens, seal them on Nephthys and release them for an extra 2 damage, while boosting your Cyclopean Hammer attacks.

• Bandolier (2) + Enchanted Blade (3) (instead of Overpower for example) for more draw and potentially skipping the Discipline.

• Leadership if you are pairing with some Cheesy Rogue, as second support after "Let me handle this!" that also brings cash.

• If you are playing with 3 or more players, First Watch to replace "Let me handle this!" and upgrade to Stand Together to replace Emergency Cache, especially after upgrading to Safeguard (2).

• Ace of Swords if you feel like your is too low and you really miss the Discipline.

• Ace of Rods you can use the of the Ace of Rods granting you +2 skills for each of the 3 attacks with your Discipline.

• It is possible and even nice to keep the Dragon Pole during the whole campaign and simply add consistency and bonus damage as you upgrade your Deck. You can find an example of such a Deck with full XP here: https://arkhamdb.com/deck/view/1837163

• Butterfly Swords: Another possibility, for thematic reasons, is to choose to use the Butterfly Swords (2) as the main weapons. This choice is not nearly as powerful as Cyclopean Hammer unless you play in Easy/Standard and certain campaigns such as TFA.

If you want to go down this path, I would recommend taking:

•• Bandolier (2) to get 2 copies at the same time

•• Enchant both Weapons to attach to each copy of Butterfly Swords (2)

••• The beauty of it is that if you exhaust one pair and then the other, that would count as 2 different attacks for your Discipline.

••• Use your Enchant Weapon boost on your first attack to give it all the chances to land and trigger the second one.

•• Galvanize to ready your Butterfly Swords (2) for an extra burst

•• Fight Events like Spectral Razor, Toe to Toe or Sweeping Kick to finish the attacks given by your Discipline.

• This deck can easily perform 10+ damages only using the Discipline's trigger and leave you with your normal 3 actions to move and live your life.

• A nice deck for this version of Lily could look like this: arkhamdb.com and evolve with the Side Deck for a lot of stat boosts, making her compatible with harder difficulties.

too much spoilers in this "recommendations" :(

Nov 21, 2021 dubcity566 · 108

The best filler arcane spot is rite of sanctification. If both of you are playing tempt fate it's enough bless to reliably land it.

Nov 21, 2021 Valentin1331 · 56229

@isuscbrmid I’m sorry, which part are you referring to? I can maybe change it accordingly.

@dubcity566 while I agree with you that bless is a good way to fill the Arcane Slot, I don’t really like Rite of Sanctification here because it makes this deck even longer to set up: you have to wait to draw 2 different cards instead of one, which is hard with so little drawing solutions. Tempt Fate then also takes a card slot which could be used for something else… Secondly it burns 2 of your pricey Slots. But a Lily is definitely possible :)

First of all, thank you for providing this decklist. I'd like to give some my personal advice. Now that you take Safeguard, it should be a multiplayer mode. Thus, what's your position of your team? I think Lili Chen should play a role in encountering the treachery with , and a fighter to beat enemies with combating cards of . Therefore, I think most of your cards are compatible with this position. However, I think Sixth Sense is not suitable for Chen. For the time being we don't consider whether in your team possess the sufficient ability to deal with clues. Sixth Sense is strong because it's durable. You do not need to spend charges and could take actions of investigating as you wish. However, it's the expert mode. Even with your discipline and Guts, your could only reach 6. Do you think it's enough of the coming "-8" or "-6"? Its probability of success is low when you'd like to investigate a place with shroud 2. If you don't think your could investigate 4 "servings" of clues, I think Read the Signs is a better choice. Besides, Talisman of Protection could be replaced by Deny Existence, which is also an outstanding card with Fast and no cost. Ultimately, "Let me handle this!" and Scrying, emm, is it suitable for Lily? I know you'd like to be aim at the treacheries and weakness in the new expansion, but I doubt its necessity. Maybe I will take two Enchanted Blade, two Ward of Protection, two Deny Existence in the preliminary stage of the campaign, and replace it with Cyclopean Hammer in the coming levels. In this way maybe I will choose to upgrade discipline first. These are my advice and I hope to have a further communication with you. Thanks!

Just a note: the ability on the unbroken side of the fist discipline does not trigger AoOs.

Nov 26, 2021 Valentin1331 · 56229

@PanicMoon thanks for the feedback, I will indeed take away that line :)

@Swordace that's great feedback, especially for all the people that will look at different decks to create their own with a mix of the ones they've seen and the cards they own.

The changes you describe are interesting as you're taking off most of the Arcane Slot Fillers and then open another way of Lily that is not starting with the Dragon Pole I guess, but with the Enchanted Blade and most likely another weapon (Machete if you're playing untabooed which I doubt) so maybe Sledgehammer and do the double-action one?

Rather than justifying every choice one by one, I'm just going to say that it's a different take on her that is as good as this one.

When it comes to clue gathering in Expert though, with +2 you are roughly at 46% success in Expert in EotE and 80% success with +4.

This doesn't count Frost tokens which are: 20% success if you are with +2 and 60% success if you are with +4.

I used this little tool to make the calculations made by @foobar.

Long story short, this is a long shot but if there are many occasions when there are no enemies and there is nothing else to do that is better than getting a 60% chance to have a clue (with Holy Rosary down), especially as the setup time decreases as you gain XP

Nov 26, 2021 Swordace · 42

@Valentin1331 I think Dragon Pole is truly designed for Lili Chen at first. However, after I have played her for 2 campaigns, I have to say making full use of this card needs so much front work(spending actions to play 3 assets to fill in your arcane slot). Besides, I think in the first level of the Edge of the Earth, you may have no time to investigate cause the pressure of fighting is pretty high. In the last few levels the situation is reverse, so your thought could be reasonable. Maybe it's because the other three investigators in my team show no abilities to fight. As far as I'm concerned, in no-enemy rounds I'll try to draw cards, gain resources and cope with my weakness if necessary to face stronger enemies. If with no taboo, Machete is definitely the best 0xp weapon in most situations. Enchanted Blade is a substitute. M

Took a slightly modified version of this through Innsmouth on standard difficulty since I had the player cards but not the campaign. Let's just say I had a smashing time! Well done. I replaced some of the cards that I guessed were for expert-level play and made the deck weaker to put my own take on it while preserving the main core of the deck. -2 guts, -2 overpower, -1 glory, -1 prepared for the worst, -2 spectral razor for +2 drawn to the flame, +2 deny existence, +1 ethereal form, +2 vicious blow, +1 holy rosary. For an enemy filled campaign like Innsmouth, it did very well once the hammers rolled in, and managed well enough until they did but the shift in power from dragon pole to hammer is huge.

Dec 03, 2021 Pearroc · 1

@Valentin1331 great decklist, how do you think it would work out solo (on normal difficulty blind edge of the earth). Would you make any changes to the deck?

Dec 03, 2021 Swordace · 42

@Pearroc My suggestion is -1 Safeguard, -1 Dragon Pole, -2 "Let me handle this!", -2 Talisman of Protection, -1 Scrying, +1 Glory, +2 Deny Existence, +1 Holy Rosary, +2 Read the Signs and +1 Drawn to the Flame. You could also refer to his answer. If you think you are lucky, you could also remove 1-2 skills card to carry more assets and events.

Dec 03, 2021 Swordace · 42

@Pearroc Remove a card to carry Bandolier because your hand slot is not enough as well.

Dec 03, 2021 Valentin1331 · 56229

@Pearroc I agree with most proposals from @Swordace :)

I would personally replace Safeguard by Bandolier indeed, then:

-2 "Let me handle this!" 2 Take the Initiative (for when you can investigate with Clairvoyance on your first action)

-2 Spectral Razor +2 Read the Signs

-2 Talisman of Protection +2 Clairvoyance

-1 Scrying +1 Holy Rosary

Now that you have multiple proposals, up to you to make your own, but Lily Chen is definitely able to run Solo :)

@Valentin1331 Bro, I have a question. I'd like to publish a deck of Rita young and I cannot find where to activate and edit side deck. Is there any button to include the upgraded cards in the side deck?

Dec 10, 2021 Valentin1331 · 56229

@Swordace I can't really show you but when I edit my deck, I click on the card that I want to add to the list, and when choosing the quantity, I can decide between adding to my deck or the Side Deck. Maybe try using a different device or browser (I checked on my phone and I could do it too).

Feb 01, 2022 condedooku · 2

Nice deck! One question, do you keep buying Backpack(2) when you upgrade? Or You only did it with the other Lily deck? Thank you!

Feb 01, 2022 Valentin1331 · 56229

Hey @condedooku thanks for the review and the question!

Once you've upgraded everything or if you feel like you are missing tutoring, you can upgrade the 2 Enchanted Blades with 2 Backpacks (2). That will help to find your Empty Vessel.

In this situation you can also upgrade out 1 copy of Prepared for the Worst (the other one being stappled to Stick to the Plan) with for example Sweeping Kick that you can use during your Discipline :)

The reason why I've opted for Stick to the Plan instead of Backpack (2) is that you can also attach Ever Vigilant and Emergency Cache to afford the expensive setup. It brings you a lot of early money, especially considering how expensive Cyclopean Hammer and Grete Wagner are.

Feb 01, 2022 condedooku · 2

Thak you Valentin1331 for your quick response!!!

Feb 01, 2022 Swordace · 42

@condedooku I'd like to add a point that the benefits of using Stick to the Plan are far greater than two Backpack. The backpack can be understood as the lubricant of the card deck, but Stick to the Plan is the key card of your deck. This card compresses your deck size and allows you to play events at any time you want. My suggestion is that even with the Enchanted Blade upgrade, there is no need to carry two Backpack. If you want one is enough to help you get through difficult times without assets in the early period of the level. My other points are in line with @Valentin1331.

@Valentin1331 Thanks for the amazing guide. I will start my first Run of EotE tonight and will be happy to try ur ideas. One question: on your upgrade path when you've added 'Stick to the plan' you counted 6 XP to the overall spend xp. I have trouble following that step, since 1 x 'Stick to the plan' is only 3 XP to me? Thanks and have a great one

Mar 20, 2022 Valentin1331 · 56229

Hey @teDDieh thanks for your message and please post your feedbacks once you completed the campaign!

Stick to the Plan is exceptional and therefore the XP cost is double :) (you can check the rules on exceptional cards here on ArkhamDB, on the Rules tab on top)

I've built your Jack and Lily decks, but now need to add a 3rd player. Any suggestions?

Mar 30, 2022 Valentin1331 · 56229

Hey @Candlehope! If it is not too late, Bob Jenkins's Criminal Rrew will be a great addition to this squad, bringing Cherished Keepsake/Talisman of Protection to Monterey Jack and Lily's Delve Too Deep to help Bob getting more XP!

Have fun buddy, and let me know how it goes!

Aug 22, 2022 Manrata · 13

Cool deck, trying to play a version of it, and it's working really well. Wondering why you haven't added Ace of Swords to the deck, you get it roughly 25% of the time in your opening hand, and it's a fairly cheap static bonus, taking up an unused slot.
The two copies of Sixth Sense seems better used on Healing Words and Clarity of Mind, so you can extra actions healing own allies, other investigators or their allies. They are also slightly cheaper.
Also we are in a 3 player Expert game, and as the primary guardian, none of my actions go on investigate. Instead of Emergency Cache I went with Voice of Ra, which considering the campaign and chaos bag might be a mistake, but they have netted above 3 resources on average at the half-way point. Also is Stick to the Plan really worth it? It's 6 xp to have Ever Vigilant and Prepared for the Worst available in opening hand everytime. Ever Vigilant is super nice, but beyond that it seems expensive.

Aug 25, 2022 Valentin1331 · 56229

Hey @Manrata, happy you are using this guide and that the Deck is helping you do a good job in Expert. That is a challenge for sure!

The reason why I didn't bother with Ace of Swords is simply that it was not so necessary in my opinion. 14 is already big enough for me and space is scarce in a Deck like this. If I would, I would only add 1 copy since the other cannot even be committed, but then you waste the set-up perk.

For Sixth Sense, I hear you and indeed keep what makes the best sense for you. Scrying could have been nice too to stir the Mythos cards and make sure that you get the enemy and your the test.

If you didn't add Emergency Cache, you can still use Stick to the Plan and my new favourite to attach there is Sweeping Kick as a panic button in case you haven't found your Cyclopean Hammer yet.

Now to the question is it mandatory? The answer is no, but it does help. Consistency is boring but rewarding. That is up to you. I personally do not want to take the risk to be swarmed with enemies before finding my Cyclopean Hammer, potentially putting my whole team in danger.

Nov 08, 2022 Feirefiz · 1

Hi @Valentin1331, I am not sure how and why you use Enchanted Blade. It doesn't help with filling up spell slots since you cannot equip it at the same time as Dragon Pole, because you would need three hand slots. Am I missing something? In your upgrade path there is no mention of Bandolier.

Nov 08, 2022 Valentin1331 · 56229

Hey @Feirefiz, thanks for your comment!

The Enchanted Blade is here mainly for consistency and setup purposes.

Unlike the Dragon Pole, it doesn't require setup to deliver +2 and +1 damage, which makes it a perfect weapon for the beginning of the scenario, leaving you some time to draw the Dragon Pole and prepare your Arcane Slot fillers.
Once this is done and when the Enchanted Blade is out of charge, you can simply replace it to enjoy the unlimited use of that deadly weapon.

Nov 08, 2022 Feirefiz · 1

Hey @Valentin1331 thanks for the quick reply! Okay, I thought that might be the intention, but I wasn't sure. So the setup would be something like playing the Enchanted Blade, some spells. And once the Enchanted Blade is empty you replace it with the pole and play another spell for the additional slot, right?

And thanks for the great deck design :)

Dec 12, 2022 EnderA · 1

Does Machete not costing XP actually change anything? You would still have to use some of your guardian slots for it, and you only have 5, so it might improve your level 0, but would hurt your progression. Whereas Enchanted Blade counts as mystic and can get you +2.

I just played your deck through Edge of the Earth, and it was easily one the top 5 experiences I've ever had in the game. I never knew how much fun to play Lily was!
